Light and darkness are two contrasting yet inseparable elements of the world. Inspired by ancient masters, particularly Caravaggio’s technique of chiaroscuro, depicting light and dark has always been a central theme of my artistic research. Apart from representing the visual contrast of light and dark, this series of paintings aims to share my observations and perspectives on society. In today’s complex society, things are often perceived as insurmountable opposites, like the clear line between black and white. However, it is important to remember that light and darkness in the world do not exist in isolation. By using traditional oil painting techniques, I am fulfilling a childhood dream. At the same time, it also serves as a nostalgia for the leisureliness in the turbulent stream of history and the fast-paced urban life. When traditional techniques are unbound by tradition, they provide an excellent opportunity to depict today’s society’s stories. My goal is to give the audience a sense of tranquillity and solitude amidst the noise and disputes of the world. At the same time, I follows in the footsteps of Mr. Caravaggio, exploring the first ray of light piercing through the darkness.
